Camera:

Set up camera to record lecturer plus one full board.  If working, use wireless microphone and plug into mic input on camera.  Hit record. When done, hit record again to stop recording.  Take out memory card and put it in laptop in order to download .MOD file to laptop.

Presenting Laptop:

  • Mac: Use quicktime to record the screen.  Should put slide show in full screen mode.  Click on down arrow in quicktime to select internal mike.  When done. Click on (square stop) button in top right menu bar.

  • Windows: If you only need to record one application (e.g., powerpoint slides), use built-in Windows 10 screen recording.  First start mirroring, then click on “windows button” + “g”. If you need to record multiple applications (e.g., flipping back and forth between slides, web browser or other demo software), OBS Studio is free and works well but can be a bit tricky to setup on a laptop.

Pixelmator:

Open preexisting .png file.

Under tools menu, click on arrow to get into text edit mode.  Update video title.

Export as .png.

— Can replace this step with camtasia itself.

Handbrake: used to convert camera .MOD file to mp4.  Keep all presets, update save as name, then click start to begin encoding.

Alternatively use ffmpeg to convert .MOD to mp4

Camtasia:

make new project with canvas size 720x1280.

import camera file post handbrake (.mp4), laptop screen capture (.mov), title file from pixelmator (.png).

If have separate audio file from AV folks, also import that file (mp3).

Edit clips to align all sound tracks.

Make .png as long as full video.

Use option button to toggle between crop and resize.

Crop slide capture to only show slide, not black frame around it.  Then resize it to half the canvas size (use yellow lines). Then center vertically on left side of canvas.

Resize camera video to fit side by side on the right side of the canvas (align bottoms).

Then place title image above camera video.

Export to produce complete .mp4

Youtube:

Upload .mp4 from camtasia

Website:

Add link for new video provided by Youtube.

Quicktime Player:

  • File -> New Movie Recording: push the button to start recording your camera and your audio

  • In addition click: File -> New Screen Recording: push the button to start recording your screen/slides

  • When done

    • stop the movie recording, save the mp4 file with you + your voice

    • Press ‘esc’ to exit the screen recording, save the mp4 file of your screen/slides
  • Using a simple video editor (iMovie, Adobe Premiere), you can overlay both videos, e.g. put a small version of yourself in the corner of your video, or just give the students both mp4 files

Hi Robert, Great advice, thanks!

I'm pre recording sessions for my students using and ipad. Do you happen to know how could i record only the white part of the ppt and not having to trim out the black part of the screen afterwards?

Hope to hear from you! Lev

I'm just guessing, but maybe it would help to change your Powerpoint aspect ratio so that it matches the aspect ratio of the final video? https://support.office.com/en-us/article/change-the-size-of-your-slides-040a811c-be43-40b9-8d04-0de5ed79987e You might have to experiment...
