Hi All,

I’m a TA in the math department, and I just wanted to share a method I’ve been using for my recitation that can accommodate students (and instructors) whose internet is too slow for Zoom.

During recitation, I run a Zoom session, but write all my notes on an iPad using an online whiteboard program (I’ve been using https://whiteboardfox.com/ since it’s free, has a view-only option, and seems to load quickly, but there are many similar programs.) I give the students the link to the whiteboard, and they can follow along with my writing in real time. This has two advantages: (1) it requires much less bandwidth than Zoom; I’ve found that it works perfectly with half the speed required by Zoom, maybe less. And (2) the online whiteboard has an infinite canvas, allowing students to easily scroll back to any previous part of my notes while I’m teaching.

Then, for students with slow or spotty internet, they can access the online whiteboard and call into the Zoom session from a phone, even a landline (the instructions are written in detail in the invitation that’s automatically generated when you schedule a Zoom meeting). This works fine for MIT-authenticated Zoom sessions as well.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful to someone out there!

Best,

Gwen

This is a great workflow for students!

Question: Do you share your screen on Zoom, as well as making the link to the whiteboard visible?

I actually don't, since I get pretty low internet speed on the iPad (My laptop connects to Ethernet, which is faster). I just drop the online whiteboard link into the Zoom chat, and so far, the students seem totally fine with that. If I were willing to put in some more work, I'm sure I could figure out a screensharing solution, but the current system is working great, so I've decided to leave it as is.
