This technology has shown promise in various applications, including rehabilitation, communication, and gaming. However, concerns have been raised about the potential health risks associated with the use of BCI devices.
According to a systematic review of 50 articles, there seems to be a low but not negligible risk of adverse effects related to BCI devices. Firstly, risks associated with invasive BCI devices may include infection, bleeding, seizures, and physical damage to the brain. Secondly, non-invasive BCI devices may present risks such as skin irritation, headaches, and eye strain as a result of prolonged use. Lastly, there is a potential risk of electromagnetic interference between BCI devices and other electronic devices, which could interfere with the proper functioning of the BCI device and lead to heating of brain tissue.
The scientific community recognizes the potential benefits of BCI devices, yet more research is needed to fully understand their long-term health effects, particularly in relation to their potential for inducing changes in the brain. Given the potential advantages of BCI devices, experts suggest it is important to continue studying their safety and efficacy, and to monitor their use in clinical settings. One notable study that highlights the potential of BCI devices involved an individual with tetraplegia who used a neuroprosthetic implant for high-performance control Additionally, another study monitored patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who used a BCI device over a longer period to examine the influence of psychological state and motivation on performance. In conclusion, today's scientific evidence suggests that the level of risk associated with BCI devices is relatively low. Nevertheless, the researchers highlight the importance of continued monitoring of BCI devices to evaluate their safety and efficacy. Further research is necessary to fully understand and address possible health risks, as well as to continue to refine and develop BCI technology for future possibilities.
