Goal

This exercise is meant to guide you through envisioning what invention education could look like in your school or organization and who might be able to support this vision

Procedure

  1. Identify a small team within your organization who might be interested in growing invention education with you. Each team member should individually complete the below questions to develop their vision and identify potential partners.
  2. The whole group should meet at a designated time to share out their individual ideas and develop a shared vision for invention within your school or organization. This may happen over multiple meetings.
  3. As a team, create an action plan to involve your community to support this vision. This will be unique to your situation but you might include setting up meetings to share your work with other teachers in your building, hosting student showcase events to invite feedback from the community, or asking a local business for technical support on a specific project.

This community engagement event is supporting young inventors at Sturgis Charter Public Schools in Hyannis, MA. Technical mentors from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, end user feedback from the International Animal Welfare Fund who are first responders for beached animals, and supportive school administrators and parents supported a team of high school students who invented a safer marine mammal transporter (shown right) for stranded dolphins at their local beaches. This strong partnership developed over six years. Learn more about their work here.
