At our October meeting, members decided that we will continue MACA-wide discussions online. Since then, a lot has happened. Our membership continues to grow, currently with over 150 alumni representing 22 states and a dozen countries. See MACA's website for more information.
MIT has kindly provided MACA with a social media channel on MIT Open. The site allows our community to share posts, blogs, comments, and up-votes. Everyone is encouraged to register and use this platform for communicating news and actions.
In November, MACA hosted a webinar by noted climate scientist, Steve Sherwood, University of New South Wales. He spoke about the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) report on climate sensitivity and shared news about the International Universities Climate Alliance, which promotes climate action through collaboration among universities.
MACA has 4 interest groups which meet periodically. Members are encouraged to sign-up to join the groups using our GoogleForm.
Group A (Climate Leadership) prepared recommendations for the 2020 MIT Climate Action Plan, which was endorsed by 50 members and communicated to the MIT administration. Recommendations included enhanced campus greenhouse emissions reductions goals, metrics for engagement with the fossil fuel industry, divestment and moral leadership on climate leadership in Development of Technologies, and holistic climate education. The letter invited MIT to engage with the group. To contact group A, email groupa@mit.alumniaction.com.
Group B (Educate/Mobilize) is engaged in an effort to educate citizens about climate change and solutions, using En-ROADS, engaging with elected officials in New York, California, Florida, and Minnesota, and collaborating with Group C to promote a National ZEV Mandate. To contact group B, email groupb@mit.alumniaction.com.
Group C (Technical Solutions) is racing to complete a Roadmap for responding to climate change while also preparing white papers and tools on technologies of interest. These include the Hydrogen Economy and EV Reference Guide, and a tool on a US Energy Forecast Model. To contact group C, email groupc@mit.alumniaction.com.
Group D (Climate Justice: Adaptation, Resilience and Equity) is getting started and looking for new members. Interested MACA members, please email groupd@mit.aumniaction.com.
