Climate Change is no more a scholarly debate, but it has hit to the bottom-line of the today’s household economy. According to the EDF, only the United States has lost USD 1 billon due to unmitigated damages.# The overall climate balance also affects in quality of health, living and subsequent economic development of a particular geography. United Nation marked 2021 as the final year to take collective action in response to the global warming. The crisis is real, it’s here at the backyard and it’s the time to act. Even during the pandemic where most of us are working from home or mostly homebound, the atmospheric CO2 levels are the highest ever and there is a constant rise in the sea level. The health of the ocean is also not giving us a positive picture for the future. As mentioned by Bill Gates in his blog, that Climate change could be worse than the Pandemic in next few decades.##
The development of Artificial Intelligence in the flied of climate science has started giving new hopes for a better planet. The scientists and policy makers around the world are working to address the issue with all possible AI use cases. AI can help to identify the critical locations, monitoring through drone surveillance, manage wildfires, predictive analysis and machine learning using critical climate data for Environmental Intelligence and so on. Analyst claims AI will likely reduce GHG emissions by 16%.
The Deep Learning will also act as a major enabler assessing the big data in change forecasting. The major benefits of using AI for the climate science is in its capability in learning algorithms and sense and send based IOT application, which also encourage in renewable energy usage and fossil fuel reduction from the life-cycle chain. The Blockchain can come handy in providing transparency, accuracy and accountability in managing the climate data and climate audit. The social impacts such as mass awareness, introduction of electric vehicles will provide a positive impetus to the mission. AI in smart cities and livable cities, showing way to efficient management of energy and environment. The technology such as precision agriculture is helping in agricultural waste reduction. Corporates and tech giants have pledged to be carbon negative with their respective milestones.
Climate Informatics and Environmental Intelligence, as the intersection of data science and climate science, is helping us improving the climate prediction for extreme events and reconstruct the past experience data for the same climatic conditions. Climate Modeling has been improved by the AI algorithms, helping in better prediction, which in turn helps the policy makers to take informed decisions and prepare for the forecasted conditions. AI helps in automating the analysis of power plant images to get emission updates regularly.
