Hi Rick, The HEET map at https://www.heet.org/gas-leaks-map says that leaks must be fixed immediately or within 1-8 years, depending on severity. Could you please explain how that relates to the statement above that half of leaks will never be fixed? Is it possible that the pipes that can't be fixed affordably can be superseded by district geothermal or individual heat pumps, electric stoves, etc?
As best I understand, only leaks which pose a "safety hazard" must be fixed ... so far. Those Level 3 leaks are not considered safety hazards, thus they have been mostly ignored until just recently as Methane has become a real Climate Change focus. They fall into the category of "environmental hazard". With the Climate focus on Methane being dangerous from a Climate POV, they are suddenly in focus and getting attention.
